Tis the season... [to give back]

Confession: one of the most challenging parts of writing this blog is spending so much time and energy on clothes and shoes and things that seem superficial.  It's a larger internal struggle as I do care about how I look (self love) while having a heart that longs to give and work to make things better for the causes that are closest to my heart.  So from time to time, and I think the holidays are one of the most appropriate times, it's good to stop for a moment and realign my focus.

I've worried that this giveaway will fall flat, but one of the things I appreciate most about our generation is that we are more conscious, and aware and empowered to do something about things that really matter.  So I hope you will join me by sharing what cause means a lot to you and together we'll give back a little something that can help a child, an animal, the environment or whatever it is that you feel strongly about.

I'm hoping this does not come off preachy in any way...  Trust me I like a new (designer) bag like the next person.  And no one says you can't have a good heart and good shoes.  Just trying to strike a balance.... are you with me!?
You may be asking yourself, what can $100 really do to help?  It's pretty amazing actually, that so little can go so far in most cases.  For example...

Because I know we all love a little something to take home, the winner of this giveback will ALSO receive a python 'Kendal' bangle from {presmer}.  The talented designer is generously donating a portion of the proceeds to your charity as well.  Seriously, win/win!

Rules of the game:

1. sign up to follow Strong Sense of Style blog
2. follow me on Twitter and tweet about the giveback
3. follow Strong Sense of Style on Facebook

For all entries (up to 3 per person) please leave a comment on this post letting me know how you have entered and if you know how you'd use this donation, please share!

I will announce the winner next Thursday, December 1st so all entries need to be in by Wednesday evening, November 30th at 9:00 p.m.

TIS THE SEASON!

Also, if I won I'd like the money to go to Sharsheret a local organization that supports Jewish women who have breast cancer or who test positive for the BRCA-1 and -2 genes.

  6. I "liked" you on Facebook! I would use the $100 for a local cause here in North Carolina, Action for Children in North Carolina. They provide money to students here in NC who are on free or reduced lunches for food and education. There are many counties here in NC where almost 96% of students are on the reduced lunches and most of them will go completely hungry over the holidays since they will not be in school. It a sad fact that my mother works with everyday and it is something I would really like to change here in NC! Great giveback, I think its such a wonderful thing you are doing!!

  9. I absolutely LOVE this giveaway! I completely agree with everything you said. I, too, love clothes and fashion and "things" but sometimes after blogging about them so much, I think someone who stumbles on my blog is going to think I am the most superficial person in the world. I would have to research who I would donate the money to, but last year I spent some time at the children's hospital at Christmas and it was heartbreaking so maybe something that could help sick children in some way. Great, great giveaway!

  11. Such a fantastic giveaway! I am a new follower of your blog.

I would donate to PetSmart Charities. As a longtime supporter and volunteer I know that the money is used in the best possible way to save pets. Programs include the Rescue Waggin' that brings pets from over crowded shelters to areas of the country where they are more likely to be adopted and Emergency Relief that can be sent out within hours of a natural or man made disaster they do wonderful things for pets.

  19. I'm inspired by you, Melis. Wonderful post.
I choose: The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Visit http://www.ncadv.org/ to learn more about how "violence against women and children results from the use of force or threat to achieve and maintain control over others in intimate relationships, and from societal abuse of power and domination in the forms of sexism, racism, homophobia, classism, anti-Semitism, able-bodyism, ageism and other oppressions."
Oh, I'm gonna tweet this as soon as I figure out how :)

  22. I totally agree with you. Sometimes I feel so shallow writing about fashion when there are so many more important things taking place in the world. This is a great idea. I should do something like this on my blog. Wonderful post!!!! My charity is S.O.S. Children's villages (sos-childrensvillages.org).

Melissa you are the best! This is such an amazing giveaway and I know exactly how you feel. There are so many charities I would love to support... I've always been touched by Operation Smile and would love to be able to support their mission.

  32. I follow your blog! I'd donate the money to aspca or some other animal related charity. I recently.realized how important it was to protect animals out there who don't have anyone to speak up for them. Especially after you see all those commercials and ads they have out lately about abused animals. I couldn't even imagine how I would feel if I saw my two dogs being abused!!!

What a great givaway, especially near the holidays!!!

P.s. than for stopping by my blog and your lovely comments!!!
